    Grass text effect

    flash templates

    Hi all !

Today FlepStudio presents a Photoshop CS3 tutorial that will help many of you, is really a beauty and very useful, thousands and thousands of applications.

In this tutorial we will create a very interesting text effect different textures.

Auhor: Create a Spectacular Grass Text Effect in Photoshop - PSDTUTS

The first thing we want to do is create an interesting background.

So duplicate the background layer and add a nice green gradient to it:

    image 1

We will now apply a nice texture to it.

You can use internet search engines to find many interesting free-to-use textures around, sxc.hu is one of my favorites.

I chose a nice crumpled paper texture and added some noise to it with the “Add noise filter”.

I then also overlayed an additional texture:

    image 3

Paste these textures in new layers above our gradient background and change their blending mode to “overlay”.

I also lowered the opacity of both layers to about 50%.

    image 4

We will now find a nice photo of grass and paste it above all layers.

Type some text above this layer and lower it’s opacity.

We will use it as a guideline:

    image 5

    Here comes the annoying bit.

Zoom in and use your pen tool to follow the outlines of the letters leaving some shapes outside the actual letters in order to resemble grass:

    image 6

Once your path is completed, go to the paths channel and load your path as a selection.

You can do this by selecting the path and clicking on the circle icon at the bottom of the paths palette.

With this selection active, go to the layers panel and select the grass layer.

Hit CTRL+J on your keyboard to duplicate the selected part of the image into a new layer.

De-activate visibility on path, grass and text layers to see the effect:

    image 7

Repeat this process for all the letters.

    image 8

Merge the layers forming the letters and add these styles:

    image 9

    image 10

Now duplicate this layer and clear its style by right-clicking on it and selecting: “Clear Style”.

Lower it’s opacity to around 50% and add these styles:

    image 11

    image 12

Now control-click on one of the layers containing our grassy text to load that layer as a selection.

Create a new layer and position it below both grassy-text layers.

    Fill that selection with black.

With the selection still active, select the “Move tool” (V on your keyboard) from the tools palette and use your arrow keys on your keyboard to move the layer slightly.

You should be pressing in this sequence : Down – Right – Down – Right.

This will give our text much more depth.

    image 13

Add a motion blur with these settings to this layer:

    image 14

Lower the shadow layer to around 50%.

    image 15

Now move this layer down and to the right like we did before so it looks like the letters are casting a shadow over the background:

    image 16

By duplicating this shadow layer and using the eraser tool with a very soft brush we can adjust the shadow as we like.

Changing the blending mode of the duplicated layers to multiply helps a lot too:

    image 17

Merge all the layers creating your text and use the burn and dodge tool to add shadows and small highlighs where needed.

    image 18

    image 19

As a final step, let’s make some adjustments to the background and add some text.

I used white text with a black outer glow set on a normal blend mode for the “studio” part.

I changed that layer mode to “Soft Light”.

For the other text I used black text with a black outer glow on blend mode: “normal”.

To add some depth to the background, merge the background layers and, with a very large and soft brush, paint the borders of our background so it looks like this:
